Paper Conservation

Paper objects, from sculptures to maps to prints all present different challenges. Sometimes they’ve been taped back together or stored against a piece of cardboard. Cleaning, washing, humidifying, flattening, repairing, and stain reduction are all options to increase the life of these items.

Newspaper Conservation

This newspaper was folded and framed for over 40 years. Once it was humidified and flattened repairs were immediately undertaken to stabilize it. These repairs were completed with remoistenable Japanese paper. This repair material was chosen because it requires a small amount of moisture to adhere into place, an important characteristic when working with water sensitive paper. Once the repairs were completed the front page was matted and framed.

This document was cleaned front and back before being guarded with thin Japanese paper restrains designed to apply even pressure to the document and crucially to tear before the document will. Then it was matted for storage.

This document came in with prior repairs and a large loss on the left side. The previous lining was reattached where delaminated and a toned fill was put into place before the letter was matted with another document.
